Tribute to Bessie Thornton, Founding President

Bessie Thornton, 89, passed away Saturday, March 26, 2011, at
a local health care facility. Funeral: 2 p.m. Tuesday at the grave in Rendon Cemetery, Farm Road 1187 in Rendon, with Jim McDoniel officiating. Visitation: The family will receive friends 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Lucas Funeral Home, 1321 Precinct Line Road, Hurst. Bessie was born May 9, 1921, in Leander to Roy and Willie Taylor Briggs. Bessie was a longtime resident of Fort Worth. She came from a family of 11 girls and two boys. She was an amateur artist and belonged to different art clubs in the area. She was a longtime member of Pipeline Road Church of Christ and moved to Legacy Church when it was built. Bessie was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Thornton Sr. Survivors: She is survived by her son, Joe Lewis Thornton Jr. and wife, Donna; grandson, Joey Thornton; great-granddaughter, Brittany Thornton; sisters, Faye Mullins, Louise Law and Lula Mae Tiner; brother, William Briggs; many nieces, nephews and extended family.
