Asa Chapman Isham

BEDFORD -- Asa Chapman Isham, 98, died on January 15, 2012 of natural causes. Memorial Service is on Saturday, January 21, 2012 at St. Philip Presbyterian Church of Hurst. His ashes will be interred next to his wife at Shannon Rose Hill Memorial Park at a later date. Chap was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on December 10, 1913 to Asa Chapman and Mary Elizabeth Isham. He graduated from the University of Chicago in 1936 and the University of Cincinnati Medical School in 1941 with a MD degree in Psychiatry. He married the late Charlotte Klotz on September 10, 1939 and interned in St. Louis in the 1940's. Chap grew up and was educated in Cincinnati, Ohio but moved his family to Lubbock, Texas in 1955. There he had a private Psychiatric practice until he moved to the Dallas/Fort Worth area. He received the "Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatry Association". He attended the Cincinnati Art Academy on weekends while in high school. Chap took piano lessons and his class played the Chicago World's Fair in 1933 and 1934. Although his vocation was Psychiatry, Chap had been painting in his spare time since 1945 and pursued art full time upon his retirement in the 1970's. He had received numerous awards for his art; both watercolors and watercolor block prints. He was Artist of the Year in Grand Prairie in 1995, with an honorary one-man show. He won First Place at the Texas State Contest for the Aging at the Dallas Art Museum. He was the author of "Creating Art History". Chap had been President of the West Texas Watercolor Society, Texas Fine Arts, Grand Prairie Visual Arts, and the Arlington 200. He was a signature member of the Texas Visual Arts, Artists and Craftmen. He was a member of St. Philip Presbyterian Church of Hurst. Their fellowship is decorated with his paintings depicting Bible stories.
Chap was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Klotz Isham (1992); son, Karl Richard Isham (1977); and sister, Mary Louise Isham.
Survivors: Children, Paul Isham and wife Anne of Austin, Mary Isham Brown and husband Phil of Grand Prairie, and John Isham and wife Heather of Chapel Hill, NC; grandchildren, Donald Isham, Kathryn Yurkovich, Charlotte Pappageorge, Susan Asam, Holly Davis, and Karl Isham; great-grandchildren, Asa Isham, Darby Isham, Nicholas Yurkovich, Phillip Yurkovich, Nicole Pappageorge, and Nathan Asam.

Chap received an Honorable Mention Award for his watercolor titled "Apple" at the Mid Cities Fine Artists 26th Annual Open Judged Art Show on August 21, 2011
